Elevate the Everyday

Project Type
Date
Flatware
December 2024
Objective
Design a flatware collection inspired by Indonesian kopi (coffee) culture, drawing from traditional artistic motifs and abstracting them into contemporary flatware forms.
The collection translates elements of Indonesian visual language into subtle surface details and intentional shapes, bringing cultural sensitivity and minimalist design together to elevate everyday moments of gathering and enjoyment.
Developed over a 15-week period through research, conceptualization, modeling, and handcrafting, the project celebrates tradition through contemporary craft.

3D Models
Printed in PLA
Handles were separated from cups before printing in preparation for one part plaster mold casting
Plaster Molds
3D prints were cast in plaster -> Prep included sanding and sealing the prints, and coating them in vaseline for easy removal after the plaster had set.

Slip Casted Greenware
Stoneware slip was poured into the molds and allowed to set for 45 minutes to reach desired thickness. The excess slip was then poured out, and the pieces were removed from the mold.
After cleaning up each one using a wet sponge and attaching the handles, everything was allowed to sit out and dry, before being bisque fired.
Glaze Air Brushing
Bisque fired pieces were airbrushed with a white satin glaze, followed up with a glossy clear glaze.
They were then glaze fired, with a couple pieces needing a second coat of glaze and firing.
